About U.S. Livestock Producers (uslp)
Meat in stores now has country of origin labeling. Even before that labeling, there were lively discussions in the livestock community about animal identification, traceback, and labeling. USDA has been lobbied by diverse groups supporting divergent approaches. While some are lobbying for government-operated programs, others prefer to leave the effort to the private sector, while still others support a public-private partnership. uslp envisions a practical way to address these divergent approaches by offering a tool for producers to access premium prices for their identified animals, while providing risk management tools for catastrophic disease and traceback liability risks.
Inasmuch as uslp is a membership organization, producers first join uslp and then can purchase warranty products for their livestock and/or poultry. Members of uslp also enjoy easy access to current information about beef cattle, dairy cattle, poultry, swine, sheep, and horses. While much of this information focuses on disease, market, and technology; opinion, analysis, and current events information is also compiled to provide a one-stop library for producer information.
Producers following uslp membership guidelines are eligible for producer-specified coverage for:
1) Animal mortality due to specified diseases,
2) Payments for quarantines, and
3) Reimbursement for covered legal fees associated with traceback actions.
Efforts to create the uslp warranty concept began in early 2005. uslp developed created an interactive process by which producers establish the warranty replacement values for their livestock and poultry to protect against catastrophic mortality losses, the lump sum warranty payment values for quarantine, and traceback liability coverage.
Developing solutions to the economic and geopolitical challenges of today’s food production is the very foundation upon which uslp is built. Whether it be perception, or the presence of health risks to animals or humans, the global marketplace is mired in aversion to risk. Warranties offered by uslp provide producers of animal proteins tools to manage catastrophic economic risks that could wipe their operation out in the blink of an eye. The uslp team is deeply rooted in animal agriculture and has a long history of providing economic solutions to the US agricultural industry.
